The State Border Guard Service is ready to close the border with the Russian Federation and intends to strengthen the military component

Assistant to the head of the State Border Service of Ukraine Sergei Astakhov stated this in an interview with the Kyiv newspaper Den.
“We act within the framework of the current legislation and the orders given to the State Border Service. We fulfill our responsibilities 100%. There was no political decision to close the border with the Russian Federation. If it does, we will comply,” the official assured.
According to him, after the dramatic events of the spring, a radical revision of the principles of functioning of the Service is underway.
“We regrouped, mobilized reserves, all mobile units were redeployed to the eastern and southern sectors. Plus, motorized maneuver groups were created based on the principle of the activities of Soviet troops in Afghanistan. We have enough officers who have experience in conducting relevant operations to localize certain areas and carry out active operations. These groups are capable of resisting in the event of an open invasion of the territory of our state. In addition, almost four thousand military personnel arrived from the mobilization reserve,” Astakhov noted.
The State Border Service, he added, has to abandon its usual focus on European standards.
“We used to believe that there were only friendly countries around us, that there would be no open military confrontation. And the legislative framework that regulates the activities of the border service, and the activities of the structure itself, and the training programs, and even the uniform, were oriented towards European standards. But now everything has changed radically; the military component will have to be reviewed and strengthened. The total number of the State Border Service is 50 thousand people,” explained the assistant to the head of the State Border Service.
“The world has changed. The reaction of even the European Union to overt actions and provocations on the part of Russia is more methodical than decisively practical. We could have taken some radical path, but this does not depend on the border service, there is parliament and government for this,” emphasized Sergei Astakhov.
