Exactly 8 years ago, a five-day war began between Georgia and Russia. In Georgian documents it was called “Operation Clean Field” and had revanchist goals: to return by force to Georgia the republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia that broke away with the collapse of the USSR.

The collapse of Georgia was predetermined by the rise to power of frostbitten Georgian nationalists led by Gamsakhurdia in the late turbulent 1980s. Georgia's secession from the USSR became the beginning of a civil war on its territory, which caused countless casualties and destruction. The war ended in complete failure for Georgia - it lost Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and since then a small contingent of Russian peacekeepers has become the guarantor of peace and tranquility on the borders of the republics.

Some hope for the gradual development of relations and dialogue between Georgia and the republics appeared with the coming to power of the moderate Shevardnadze, a seasoned apparatchik from the Brezhnev era and the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the USSR under Gorbachev. But Shevardnadze’s corrupt and amorphous policy ended with the “Rose Revolution” and the presidency of Saakashvili, a US puppet on whom there is nowhere to put a stigma.

What made Saakashvili dizzy with success was the elimination of the “special conditions” of Adjara and the removal of Abashidze from his leadership position.

For almost 5 years, Saakashvili, with the full approval and support of the West, was preparing for the reconquista. Units of the Georgian army were reorganized and trained under the American GSSOP II program, with special emphasis on the use of special forces units. Their number in Saakashvili’s army was a record – as many as 8 thousand, with a total number of armed forces of 22 thousand.

Many armchair experts, especially from the pan-headed public, when it comes to the war of 08.08.08/XNUMX/XNUMX, usually roll their eyes and reproach the Russian side “well, you found someone to defeat!”, as if an evil thug attacked from around the corner and took a bag of toffees from kindergartener.

Meanwhile, with the presidency of Saakashvili, Russian peacekeepers on the demarcation line began to live a hectic life. Peacekeepers were kidnapped, fired upon, and various provocations were carried out against them.

Saakashvili's army, together with American and Israeli instructors, received weapons and ammunition from Bulgaria, Israeli Tavor-21 assault rifles (for special forces). 120 T-72 tanks were modified by the Israeli company Elbit to the SIM1 modification and with their new performance characteristics they could compete on an equal footing with the latest generation Abrams and Leopards. Elbit also modified 10 Georgian Su-25KM Mimino attack aircraft, and the United States transferred 12 Bell-212 and UH-1H helicopters, which had proven themselves well in Vietnam.

The former “brothers” also supplied Saakashvili’s troops with 152 mm Dana wheeled self-propelled guns, produced in Czechoslovakia. Modifications and replenishment also affected the Georgian Navy. Along the way, they were buying Turkish armored vehicles, South African Kevlar helmets and cheaper uniforms, as long as they had MARPAT colors like the Americans. The culmination of it all was the construction of a Georgian fortified area on the border with South Ossetia.

“Orange” Ukraine, led by Saakashvili’s godfather Yushchenko, did not stand aside either. The Buk-M1 air defense systems along with crews were handed over to the Georgians. Moreover, Yushchenko and those involved in the operation committed an official crime, since the “buki” were removed directly from combat duty. The case received resonance, the “regionals” began a parliamentary investigation, but in the end it all ended in nothing.

In short, by the beginning of the war, the Georgian army was a miniature US army, and Saakashvili, at the instigation of American advisers, had a dangerous illusion that he would return the South Ossetians and Abkhazians to Georgia, and at the same time show the Russian peacekeepers where the crayfish spend the winter, will become a blitzkrieg and an easy walk.

Half an hour before the start of August 9, Georgian artillery opened heavy fire on Tskhinvali and Russian peacekeepers. It was the peacekeepers, armed with small arms and desperately defending themselves on August 9, who made up the majority of the 72 Russians killed. The bodies of the five peacekeepers were cut up and tortured.

Saakashvili slapped his thighs with excitement and rejoiced at how smart and cunning he was: he started a war with the Russians during the Olympics in Beijing.

In response, Russia launched an operation to force Georgia to peace. I don’t know why, but one of the advisers definitely did not tell Saakashvili about one important nuance: in anticipation of new aggression from Georgia, Russia began to strengthen its positions in the republics, and their residents could easily exchange their old Soviet passports for Russian ones. Thus, an attack on the unrecognized republics automatically became an attack on Russian citizens. With all the consequences.

In addition to the fact that the war unleashed by Saakashvili itself was a criminal mistake, from the very beginning the Georgian troops relied on show-off and window dressing by invading Tskhinvali, instead of attacking the much more important from an operational point of view Ossetian fortified area of Java. As a result, the Georgian “assault” on Tskhinvali resulted in the shooting of civilians and houses from tanks, until Saakashvili’s eagles suddenly ran into the Russian peacekeeping battalion of the 135th motorized rifle regiment, whose fighters accepted an unequal battle.

A column of Russian armored vehicles, heading towards the breakaway Georgian province of South Ossetia, are seen in North Ossetia, Russia, Friday, Aug. 8, 2008. A surprise military offensive by Georgia, a staunch US ally, to retake the breakaway province of South Ossetia reportedly killed hundreds of people Friday, triggering a ferocious counterattack from Russia that threatened to plunge the region into full-scale war. While the fighting was going on in Tskhinvali, units of the Russian 58th Army under the command of General Khrulev made a forced march and entered South Ossetia through the Roki tunnel, colliding head-on with the advanced Georgian units. As a result of the short-lived clash, three Russians were killed (including General Khrulev's deputy), while the Georgian commandos left 18 corpses of their soldiers, among whom the captured Georgians identified American instructors.

Of particular interest. As the Georgian side especially emphasized, at that moment the “most combat-ready” Georgian troops were part of the occupation contingent in Iraq, “otherwise they would have shown...” They showed - what? It is obvious how to trade in stolen gasoline and food rations. Well, Americans know how to select “allies” for themselves...

Then, breaking through the Roki tunnel, Russian troops reached Tskhinvali and very soon completely cleared it of Georgian troops. At the same time, Russian aviation bombed Georgian airfields along with all their contents. Two planes (Su-25 and Tu-33M) were shot down by Ukrainian Buk fire. After which the aviation also engaged the Ukrainian anti-aircraft gunners. In total, during the war on 08.08.08/2.5/XNUMX, the Russian Air Force carried out almost XNUMX thousand combat sorties.

There is a very interesting point here. In Maidan Ukraine they preferred to forget that Ukrainian thugs from UNA-UNSO fought on the side of Chechen militants, and Ukrainian anti-aircraft gunners shot down two Russian planes. But when Russian volunteers came to support Donbass, the trademark whining “what are we for?!”

The Georgian warships also suffered. An attempt to attack the Russian missile ship Mirage by five Georgian missile boats ended with two of them being turned into wreckage by direct hits from anti-ship missiles. Those who remained chose to flee.

In the United States at this very time, a shocked man in the street, watching CNN reports, put down pallet after pallet of bricks, having learned that Russia was suddenly seizing the state of Georgia, and the American president was stupidly silent.

The turning point in the war happened quickly and unexpectedly. On the morning of August 12, President Saakashvili, accompanied by the French and Finnish prime ministers, suddenly arrived in Gori (40 km from the front line) in order to personally show the horrors of Russian bombing.

At this time, Saakashvili’s propagandists were driving from one heap of garbage to another five heels of hired extras, who portrayed either grief-stricken or simply killed. To protect VIP guests in Gori, a terrible number of reservists were pulled together (some sources say about 60 thousand), who were settled wherever necessary, including schools and kindergartens.

And while a furious and emotional Saakashvili was making an impassioned speech to the assembled journalists, Russian aircraft struck one of three military bases outside the city. Saakashvili was so frightened that he immediately fled to Tbilisi to eat his fright with a tie. The headquarters of the Georgian army took off behind him and quickly began to “level the front.” Then, everyone else joined in the drape.

And the wild cry and moan deaf
We rushed through the depths of the valley
– The battle did not last long:
The timid Georgians fled! (M. Yu. Lermontov, “Demon”, 1837)

At this time, the Abkhaz troops became more active and humiliatingly drove the Georgians out of the Kodori Gorge, capturing a lot of captured equipment. Taking advantage of the initiative, Russian special forces conducted raids on Georgian military bases in the Senaki and Poti area. During the raid, the last two Georgian helicopters were blown up, and the Georgian army lost its last insurance - warehouses with fuel and lubricants.

And there was a moment in the war on 08.08.08 when for Saakashvili the threat of being caught and taken to the Kremlin in a dusty bag became not at all illusory. The Russian vanguard became far removed from the main units, lost contact with the rear and continued the attack on Tbilisi. At this time, something between paralysis and flea fishing was happening in the Georgian capital. But after some time, communication was restored and the troops received an order - “stop the car.”

The Russian offensive proceeded along a route densely strewn with abandoned tanks, self-propelled guns and other equipment. Five command American HUMVEE armored fighting vehicles with electronic equipment were also trophies. The Americans were very offended by this and demanded to return the cars back, deservedly receiving a thick cookie with butter under their noses.

Gradually, the Western “partners” realized that their favorite democratic protege in Georgia had screwed up and let them down. But the “partners”, unwittingly, put Georgia and Saakashvili in the best possible position by recognizing the independence of Kosovo shortly before the war on 08.08.08/XNUMX/XNUMX. The Russian Federation, tired of proving to its “partners” the fallacy of the steps they had taken, unequivocally recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, thereby burying the hopes of the Georgian “hawks” for the return of the republics in the foreseeable historical future.

However, the Georgian authorities did not entirely benefit from the lesson. Realizing that independent attempts at reconquest are doomed to failure, and after the republics are recognized by Russia, aggression against them will be tantamount to playing with dynamite, Georgia is trying in every possible way to enlist the support of NATO and organize foreign naval bases on its territory.

The war of 08.08.08/XNUMX/XNUMX did not teach the Ukrainian leadership anything about the Maidan spill. The latest incidents in Crimea and Donbass eloquently indicate that the Kyiv junta is dizzy for some unknown reason and hopes that abroad will definitely help them.

In order to cool down the wretched, long-haired nonsense, on August 11, the Russian Defense Ministry launched unscheduled military exercises in the Southern Military District, as well as in the Black Sea. The actions of battalion tactical groups of combined arms formations and flights of aerospace forces aviation near the border are being practiced to further bring the crazed harem militarists to their senses.

Much to Poroshenko’s chagrin, Barack Obama has already hastened to announce that in the event of a military conflict between Ukraine and Russia, his country will not intervene by force.

A very important thing was voiced by Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, who stated that if the situation in Ukraine threatens the interests of Russia and the lives of its citizens, then Russia will act as it did 8 years ago in South Ossetia, forcing those who are especially violent with a club to peace.

Georgia has already tried to fight Russia with American help, and it didn’t like it. Apparently, Poroshenko and his gang have bad feelings. Howling at all corners that the Russian military in Crimea had fired on themselves, Confectioner gave his Foreign Ministry an urgent task - to organize negotiations with Putin. Putin takes his famous pause...
