Greece prepares to repel seaborne invasion by migrants from Turkey
Greece is ready to withdraw warships to the sea if Turkey again aggressively condones the penetration of illegal immigrants into its territory via the sea route.
This was reported by the Greek media, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the Greek coast guard, six cargo ships were seen preparing on the Turkish coast to ferry migrants to the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea. In turn, representatives of the Greek Navy said that they are working in direct contact with the coast guard, and if ships with migrants refuse to obey the demands of the border guards and continue heading towards Greece, they will take warships to sea to prevent them.
The Greek side believes that in the coming days a provocation may take place with the participation of one or two transport workers who will try to deliver several hundred illegal immigrants to the islands of the Aegean Sea. Or repeat incident on March 16, when a Turkish tanker carrying 193 migrants ran aground off the coast of the island of Kea, whom the Greek leadership was subsequently forced to send to the continent.
Athens also notes that the Turkish navy left its bases allegedly out of fear of infection of personnel with the coronavirus. At the same time, there were previously violent incidents, when Turkish coast guard boats escorted boats with migrants, and also several times rammed Greek coast guard boats that were preventing illegal immigrants.
