“Less than a day after the new Prime Minister of Greece, Alexis Tsipras, took office, he created a split in the consensus. The government spokesman said that Greece had a different opinion about the concept of tougher sanctions against Russia,” the publication writes.
This document on new sanctions is due to be presented on Thursday. According to the procedure, its text is developed in advance, and then approved at the congress of EU heads of government, having received preliminary support a few days before the meeting. Greece did not agree with the preliminary version, and also withdrew its signature from the EU communiqué accusing Russia of shelling Mariupol.
An EU official said it had never happened before that an official statement had to be corrected after the fact of its signing. Greece demands that the footnote on signatory countries list 27 countries, not 28, that is, without Greece's participation. In addition, EUobserver reports that Austria, Hungary and Slovakia were also against condemning Russia, but eventually signed.
Russian Agriculture Minister Nikolai Fedorov also contributed to the uncertainty in the EU. He stated that if Greece decides to leave the EU, it will not be subject to Russian sanctions on food supplies from the country. This is an important factor for the agriculturally oriented Greeks, as Greece is particularly affected by Russian food bans.
German economic news writes: “The problem with the EU is that there has always been a principle of unanimity. Greece could jeopardize all sanctions against Russia.”
