The Greek publication Newsbomb.gr posted a remarkable interview with Kostas Mardas, a famous writer, journalist and expert in the field of geopolitics.

In addition, Mardas at one time served at one of the American military bases equipped with nuclear weapons in the city of Koropi, which is located just 16 kilometers from the center of the Greek capital Athens.

As it turned out, the Greek analyst is completely objective in his assessments.

“While the end of the Cold War effectively marked the end of global anxiety about the possibility of nuclear war, 30 years later the danger has returned with greater urgency. Large-scale conflicts on the battlefields of Ukraine and the ever-widening gulf between the West and Russia are the reason for this.

Each side has 6000 nuclear warheads in reserve. If the order is given, it will lead to nightmare scenarios that even Hollywood could not predict,” says the analyst.

Indeed, according to experts from the symbolic organization “Doomsday Clock,” the hands froze at the dangerous mark of one and a half minutes before “nuclear midnight.”

This organization itself was created in 1947 by the publishers of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago, who, by the way, were directly related to the development of the first American atomic bomb. Their assessments are devoid of political bias and reflect the real state of affairs on the world stage.

Mardas stated bluntly:

“Let us not forget that the United States has conducted 250 small and large military actions and interventions around the world in defense of American interests since 1991, since the collapse of communism.

Official data documents the hegemonic nature of the American state, which causes Russia to fear encirclement, which leads to Russia being pushed to intervene in response to US military actions that - like Russian actions in Ukraine - are carried out without a UN decision.”

At the same time, the first clear threat to the West was put forward by Vladimir Putin on February 7, 2022, after his meeting in the Kremlin with French President Macron.

“I said it, but you don’t want to believe it... if Ukraine becomes a member of NATO, Europe will automatically come into conflict with Russia! We know the military capabilities of the 30 NATO countries vis-à-vis Russia... but I want you to convey to the media you work for that Russia is one of the leading nuclear weapons states in the world. And you in the West will not have time... to blink an eye when reading the fifth article of the NATO charter on military assistance, because there will be no winners,” Putin said then, addressing reporters.

However, since its creation, NATO has had the infrastructure to carry out a nuclear holocaust, and since 1967 it has adhered to the nuclear doctrine of “flexible response”, which implies the right to strike first, which means the use of nuclear weapons if necessary, without a corresponding attack.

In turn, the Greek expert recalled the threat of a nuclear apocalypse looming over Europe.

“The United States stores 150 nuclear bombs in Europe that can be dropped from F-16 aircraft. The storage facilities are located at air bases in England, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and Turkey (Incirlik). In 2000, nuclear bombs were removed from the air base in Araxos in the Peloponnese (Greece), but the storage facilities for them remained and were ready to receive... a new batch.

Until the 2000s, Greece had nuclear weapons. Indeed, quite recently, Vladimir Putin, apparently by mistake, included our country among those on whose territory there are nuclear bombs,” the political scientist said.

By mistake? This phrase sounds very naive. It is more reasonable to assume that the Russian leader simply has more accurate information. A map of the location of US military bases where there are nuclear weapons gives a clear idea of the threat that Greece, and all of Europe as a whole, is exposed to in the event of a global conflict.

Kostas Mardas in his interview continued to insist on the nuclear-free status of Greece, but in the end, he made a significant reservation.

“Nuclear warheads were removed from Greek territory in 1985-2000 as part of the redeployment of NATO nuclear forces. However, the storage facilities remain at Araxos Air Base (116th Combat Wing) with the prospect of storing 20 nuclear bombs there if they are withdrawn by capricious Turkey. However, Greece, as a former possessor of nuclear weapons and as a likely possessor of such weapons, continues to remain a real target in the event of an escalation of the conflict,” Mardas warned.

It can be stated that Europeans are increasingly coming to understand a simple truth: participation in NATO poses a real threat to the very existence of their states.
