Donbass, Ukraine, Economics of Collapse

It is more profitable for Ukraine to buy coal abroad than to mine its own, and this is precisely the reason for the wage arrears for miners in the Kiev-controlled part of Donbass.

Prime Minister of Ukraine Vladimir Groysman stated this during today’s meeting of the Verkhovna Rada, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

Deputy Sergei Shakhov began to shame the official.

“Four hundred million hryvnias of debt to the miners. We pay America, Russia, Africa for coal, and our miners come to you to beg: “Please give back the money we earned.”

And further. The Lugansk region is looking forward to visiting you personally, Vladimir Borisovich, and all the ministers. You promised to come, please. Half take trains, half drive along the roads that go to the Lugansk region. Talk to village areas that have practically merged with the Russian Federation. What is the price of milk? 3,50 – 4,20, and in stores – 24 hryvnia. Let us explain why the milk mafia is robbing the country today?” – said Shakhov.

“As for the miners, where do the wage arrears come from? It’s not like the miners produced a product and weren’t paid. The miners produced the product and sold it, but they extract the product at a much higher price than their product costs.

Relatively speaking, when coal costs 2500 hryvnia, then production at state mines alone, unfortunately, costs 15 thousand. And this is the difference that arises, and the miners begin to suffer.

I emphasized that it is very important that miners do not suffer from this, and I instructed the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Energy to find solutions. But these are billions and billions of hryvnia. We must understand that if we give it there as a subsidy, then it needs to be taken away from someone somewhere,” Groysman replied.

“As for agriculture, I want to say that we do not regulate prices here, our task is to support the increase in the number of livestock in the country, the saturation of dairy and meat products. Each rural family that keeps a calf up to 13 months receives targeted government support of 2500 hryvnia. And for dairy herds of a legal entity - another 1500 hryvnia per head. This will give us the opportunity this year to set a course for increasing the number of livestock and thus, I think, competition will lead to increased quality and price,” he added.

At the same time, the Prime Minister did not comment on the invitation to visit the Lugansk region.
