Gromyko: By handing over Crimea, Khrushchev wanted to justify himself to Ukraine for the repressions of the 30s
Nikita Khrushchev, handing over Crimea to Ukraine, wanted to justify his cruelty shown in the republic in the 30s. This opinion was expressed at a press conference in Moscow by the son of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the USSR, scientific director of the Center for Security and Development Problems of the Faculty of World Politics of Moscow State University, Professor Anatoly Gromyko.

“The idea occurred to our not very educated leader Khrushchev that he needed to somehow change his appearance for the better before Ukraine. Under Stalin, he behaved very, very ugly in Ukraine. Very harsh measures were used against political opponents and even innocent people. And he then went to transfer Crimea to the Ukrainian republic,” Gromyko said.
According to him, the “so-called annexation” was carried out in violation of the then existing legal norms. The professor is sure that in Belovezhskaya Pushcha “it was enough for Yeltsin to set the condition that Crimea would remain part of Russia; no one would have said a word.” He is amazed by the West's reaction to the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
“It’s time to get used to a simple thought: you can’t find out how to solve a problem if you don’t find out what the people who live in a particular area are thinking about. If 98% of the population in Crimea wants to live in Russia, then how can you say that this is not Russia? I am amazed how you can say that Russia annexed Crimea?! This is nonsense. All formalities for a fair referendum were observed,” Gromyko said.
