A group of liberals suspiciously traveling around Africa were detained and deported
Russian liberal travel blogger Ilya Varlamov and member of the controversial Pussy Riot art group Pyotr Verzilov, as well as three other people from their group who arrived from the Russian Federation, were detained for the second time in South Sudan on Thursday. The authorities informed the Russians of deportation. Varlamov and Verzilov were locked in a hotel under the pretext of the need to be in quarantine before departure.
This morning Varlamov reported that everyone was already free. “Now all that’s left is to fly away from this wonderful place!” Varlamov wrote.
The day before, on Wednesday, Russian liberals were also detained by local special services and kept in a room full of insects for the whole day. Then Varlamov was found to have a remote control for the drone, which, according to security officials, some military objects could be filmed. The drone itself was taken away from the blogger in Uganda, where it was before Sudan.
The Russian Foreign Ministry intervened in the case, but Varlamov and Verzilov claimed that they were released thanks to the intervention of the son of the Sudanese president.
Interestingly, the Sudanese embassy in the Russian Federation stated that the liberals did not apply to them for a visa. Varlamov, on the contrary, assured that they had all the necessary documents, and even paid for a filming license in the amount of $350.
