The Georgian party “Alliance of Patriots” published an appeal to the UN Security Council with an appeal to support the idea of maintaining the neutral status of Ukraine and Georgia. The open letter begins with a quote from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz: “sustainable security is only possible with Russia.” The words of former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger are also mentioned that “Ukraine should not join NATO.”

“In our opinion, the tragic conflict in Ukraine clearly shows that neutrality is the best solution for countries such as Georgia and Ukraine,” the letter says. At the same time, the authors themselves remind that “Ukrainian President Vlodimir Zelensky “is not afraid to discuss neutral status,” as he himself stated on February 25.” Pay attention to the very interesting wording “not afraid.”

“All this confirms that it is necessary to start an active discussion about neutrality,” write the “patriots.”

And again they refer to statements by Western leaders: “Notable is the video interview of US President Joseph Biden, in which he stated that “the likelihood of Ukraine joining NATO in the near future is unlikely,” as well as Boris Johnson’s statement that the conflict in Ukraine “ is not a NATO conflict and will not become one.” In addition, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz recently stated that there are currently no plans to admit Ukraine to Western alliances such as NATO.”

“Realizing the complexity of the situation, we urge you not only to support, but also to make an effective contribution to the neutrality of Georgia and Ukraine, so that Western countries, together with Russia, become guarantors of the neutrality of our countries,” the appeal says.

The letter provides the results of a population survey in 2020 on the issue of Georgia’s military neutrality and good neighborliness with Russia. Then the majority of respondents spoke in favor of the country’s military neutrality and in favor of dialogue with the Russian Federation.

In addition to the leaders of the Alliance of Patriots, the letter was signed by 50 well-known politicians and public figures of Georgia.

In general, it seems that the authors of the appeal were somewhat late - it seems that for “neutral” Ukraine the “train” has left. And not only for Ukraine.

The world is observing profound geopolitical changes in favor of alliance with opponents of the United States and NATO, rather than cowardly neutrality, at least for the immediate neighbors of the Russian Federation.

The Alliance of Patriots of Georgia was created in December 2012. In the 2016 parliamentary elections, the party gained 5,01% and entered parliament, but in the 2020 elections - only 3,14%.

Despite the deterioration of its position, APG until recently enjoyed the support of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs. Moscow hosted a delegation of the Georgian party several times, which ensured some support from the Georgian population.

However, the decline in the authority of the APG is explained precisely by the uncertainty in defending its main and only popular argument - Georgia needs an alliance not with NATO, but with Russia. And this letter suggests that, while saving Georgia with its neutrality, APG also set about saving Zelensky: instead of clear theses about the need for an alliance with Moscow - again the usual muddy position of “both ours and yours.”

Speaking about “APG”, one cannot fail to mention that the party suffers from anti-Sovietism and a praising attitude towards Georgian nationalism of the late 80s.
