Georgian Deputy Speaker warned against appointing Saakashvili to any position
Vice-Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Georgiy Volsky, while broadcasting on Ukrainian TV, expressed bewilderment that the appointment of fugitive Georgian ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili to the post of deputy prime minister is being discussed in Kyiv.
Volsky recalled that Saakashvili was convicted in absentia on several criminal charges in his homeland. This is a “time bomb” that could undermine relations between Kiev and Tbilisi, the vice speaker warned in an interview with the 112-Ukraine TV channel.
“Isn’t this some kind of help for the deterioration of relations? And is it necessary for a strategic ally, Ukraine, to make such decisions despite those facts? I'm talking about facts that should be known to the Ukrainian authorities and, despite this, they make such a decision, even raising such a question!
Why are they questioning an issue that is strategically necessary not only for the two sides, but also for the very important relationship that exists between us...
I know exactly what will happen to Ukraine in terms of where they expect the situation to improve if he is appointed. This is what I know for sure, I emphasize, in any executive position, on everyone – you are planting a time bomb, which in his previous life showed what he is capable of,” Volsky said.
Poll by pro-government TV channel Imedi (Georgia): Will Saakashvili’s appointment to any position in Ukraine be an insult to Georgia? Yes – 92.1%, No – 7.9%
Let us recall that earlier ex-deputy Sergei Leshchenko said that Saakashvili’s appointment has a high chance of being completely disrupted due to a lack of votes in support of his candidacy in the Verkhovna Rada. Speaker Dmitry Razumkov, in particular, spoke out against it.
