Georgians refuse to believe that South Ossetia will go to Russia
Tbilisi does not believe in the prospect of South Ossetia soon joining Russia. They consider Anatoly Bibilov’s words an election game.
You need to understand that when it comes to the fate of the lost province (Tbilisi continues to call Ossetia exclusively the “Tskhinvali region”), even pro-Russian Georgians deny it the right to independence.
In the Georgian parliament, Russia is threatened with “violation of international law.”
“There is now an election period, and therefore this topic has become relevant again. It is not surprising that Bibilov and anyone else want to be seen under the Russian flag and thus achieve success. This is the only thing that South Ossetian presidential candidates are holding on to. They have nothing more to offer to the population of the Tskhinvali region. Except for the referendum. But it will be difficult for the Russian Federation itself to take another step in violation of international law at this level,” says deputy Gia Volsky.
Even the statements of representatives of the United Russia party in support of the reunification announced by Bibilov do not convince Georgian patriots. Here, for example, is how Shota Akhaidze, a political scientist considered to be pro-Russian, assesses the situation.
He believes that The argument for Moscow should be the threat of overthrowing the current Georgian government and the return of Mikheil Saakashvili’s political force to the ruling position.
The Saakashists really brand their competitors - the authorities - as agents of Moscow (but all this is just a game, we have already seen this more than once in Ukraine, where those same “agents” swore allegiance to Bandera at the decisive moment).
You have to understand that The current government, represented by the Georgian Dream party, also declares the need to join the EU and NATO. It is simply believed that the unpredictable Saakashists will represent a completely unacceptable option for the Kremlin than the current regime.
“At this stage, the President of the Russian Federation has no time to resolve such issues. At this stage, the Russian leadership does not need to strain relations with Georgia at all.
Bibilov, of course, can hold a referendum and then ask to reunite with Russia, but Moscow has the final say.
Of course, the ruling Georgian Dream will not agree with Bibilov’s initiative, since South Ossetia is the historical land of Georgia. Official Tbilisi is making every effort to return it (South Ossetia) back to Georgia.
Today, the United National Movement and the entire destructive opposition in Georgia, together with the West, are using Bibilov’s words to blackmail the ruling Georgian Dream. All this is being done in order to carry out a coup in Georgia and overthrow the ruling government.
No one will say that this is Bibilov’s sole statement, but, as always, they will begin to blame Russia for all the troubles. This is a provocative step,” says Aphaidze.
