Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili stated this today in a conversation with journalists, the resource reports. "Georgia online".
“Personally, my position, as the head of government, is the following: I was, and now am also against Georgia’s joining the EU sanctions against Russia,” the head of the Georgian government emphasized. – We adhered to this position last year and adhere to it now. We do not intend to change our position. One of the 15 sanctions that Georgia joined last year concerned sanctions on products manufactured in Crimea and Sevastopol. As you know, we are in the same position, we have a problem with our occupied territories in Abkhazia and Samachablo, and we demand the same from other states. Based on our policy of non-recognition, this was an inevitable necessity. We discussed other sanctions in the government last year and decided that we were not going to join the sanctions against Russia. This decision remains in force."
According to him, there are several reasons for making such a decision. First of all, Georgia greatly values the fact that it has restored trade relations with Russia.
“We were able to reopen the market through a pragmatic policy, and we appreciate that,” the prime minister said.
He also answered the question why it was not known about Georgia’s accession to a specific EU sanction in 2014.
“As you can see, neither our media nor the Russian ones were interested,” believes Irakli Garibashvili. – I think this excitement has been artificially raised. I have no doubt that internal destructive forces do not want the normalization of relations and the restoration of trade relations, but our interest is the restoration of good neighborly relations with Russia.”
