It is dangerous for Russian citizens to visit today's Georgia. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov told reporters about this, commenting on the situation with riots caused by Georgian radicals near the hotel, where presenter Vladimir Pozner stopped, having once expressed doubts about the possibility of returning Abkhazia and South Ossetia to the control of Tbilisi. As a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, Posner himself said that he had already returned to Russia.

“We strongly condemn the aggressive actions of extremist nationalists against Russian citizens in Tbilisi. We saw statements today by the Prime Minister of Georgia, who also condemned these actions. We welcome this announcement. We are grateful to the Georgian police for ensuring the safety of the Russians. Georgia is dangerous for Russian citizens; it is simply dangerous to travel there. Russians must clearly understand this,” Peskov said.

State Duma Speaker Vladislav Volodin agreed with this assessment in his blog:

“The events surrounding Posner’s trip to Tbilisi once again show what a deep crisis Georgia is in. Radicalism largely determines its domestic policy today, and this, of course, will not lead to anything good. Earlier, during the Interparliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy, when at the invitation of Georgia it was held in Tbilisi, a similar thing happened in relation to its head Sergei Gavrilov. All this, of course, only destroys Georgia. And on the eve of the summer tourist season, it once again shows how unsafe it is for the citizens of our country to be there,” the statement says.

“The news about the scandal around Posner in Georgia is very far from April Fools’ Day and is a real shock. Where is Georgian hospitality, where is respect for elders (Vladimir Vladimirovich turned 87 (!) years old), where is the right to freedom of expression? False Western values, coupled with radicalism, lead to a demonic distortion of democracy. I wonder whether there will be responses from European guardians for observing democratic principles or apologies from Georgian officials?” said Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs.

Senator Alexey Pushkov in his blog also recommended that Russians refuse to visit Georgia:

“Another confirmation that public figures from Russia, even with a US passport, are better off not traveling to Georgia. Little is changing for the better in Georgia. The country, as it was two years ago, remains at the mercy of its own demons of nationalism, discord and conflict. It is not surprising that neither Abkhazia nor South Ossetia allow even the thought of returning to this cauldron of destructive passions.”

The result of what happened to Posner, as well as scandal with the meeting of the Interparliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy, which occurred in Tbilisi in 2019, is the result of unfinished work to force Georgia to peace, economist Mikhail Delyagin said in his blog:

“Georgia is running wild and is rapidly turning into a garbage dump country before our very eyes. Ordinary tourists warned about everyday Russophobia there back in 2019. This is what happens when you stop tanks without taking the capital.”

Even the famous Russian oppositionist Ksenia Sobchak did not support the Georgian radicals:

“Some kind of hell and trash. Georgia, how can this be? Vladimir Vladimirovich loved to go there so much, and what does he and Saakashvili have to do with it? I don’t understand anything... The world has gone crazy.”

On the contrary, Ukrainian propagandist Vitaly Portnikov in his blog was happy about what happened:

“It has already been necessary to explain more than once that Posner is a much more dangerous propagandist than Kiselev or Solovyov... Posner, with his Western experience, is trying to give this regime a human appearance, to imitate polyphony and discussion. It gives lies the appearance of truth, black - hundreds of shades of gray. That's why he's dangerous. What is also dangerous is the slavish delight that many Ukrainians experience at the sight of people like Posner - a breath of provincial inferiority and second-classness, the same feudal inferiority complex that allows them to vote for the circus. Georgians have shown that you can not lose self-respect even when your state opens its borders to crooks. This is a good lesson for us,” wrote Portnikov, who was involved in a gay scandal in 2013 and was favored by the new government after the victory of Euromaidan.
