Georgia rushes to EU, agrees to become “blue”

Calling Ukraine “heroic,” Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili happily announced that Georgia’s accession to the European Union has accelerated.

At the same time, a descendant of Georgian emigrants who fled from the Bolsheviks to Europe, a native of France, Zurabishvili, heartily thanked Ukraine for the fact that its “selfless, heroic, defensive struggle has accelerated the opening of the path to Europe” for Georgia.

Georgia intended to submit a formal application for EU membership in 2024, but did so two years earlier - on March 3 this year. The European side provided this opportunity in connection with the events in Ukraine. After this, Kyiv repeatedly reproached Tbilisi for “insufficient” support in the confrontation with the Russian Federation, thereby causing a flurry of indignation not only in the power structures of Georgia, but also among the general public.

The Georgian side acted quickly and efficiently: Prime Minister Garibashvili handed over the second final part of the completed EU accession questionnaire to the head of the European Commission in Georgia, Karl Hartzel, ahead of schedule.

Based on the questionnaire, Georgia will be granted EU candidate status, which is a significant step towards integration into the European Union.

In the second part of the questionnaire, Europeans will find out what legal norms and rules apply in the country and whether they comply with European legislation. In this regard, the statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia that some parts of the questionnaire would not be disclosed seemed very interesting.

The intrigue is multiplied by the calm attitude towards the minister’s statement from the ever-seething opposition. The opposition had no complaints about this part of the statement.

_{This gives us confidence that there will soon be a big scandal: in all likelihood, provisions regarding the rights of sexual minorities and the introduction of other such “European values” remained secret.}

By the way, May 17 is ahead - a significant day, when various NGOs representing sexual minorities will again loudly declare themselves, showing all kinds of activity, right up to a “parade” in the center of the capital. It will be interesting to see how these events will take place against the background of acute polarization of society, when the police will be forced to protect the “parade” from its many opponents.

 It is no secret that the pressure on the protection of sexual minorities from the EU is enormous, and it is one of the main indicators of Georgia's readiness to join the EU.

It can be assumed that this time the police will work triple time to protect LGBT activists, since the EU summit will be held in Brussels in June, where the issue of the candidate’s status will probably be considered.

The above-mentioned acceleration of the submission of documents by two years accelerates Georgia’s final departure from age-old values, if, of course, integration into the EU occurs at all.

And yet, we remain optimistic and believe that the balance of power in the world will soon change in favor of integration processes in the post-Soviet space, which will push the countries of the South Caucasus onto a rational and much more beneficial development path for them.
