“It’s out of the question” - Ukraine will not be compensated for losses from Nord Stream 2
During his visit to Berlin, President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky will not be able to achieve any compensation for the loss of revenues from the transit of Russian gas due to the launch of Nord Stream 2; at best, Germany will agree to maintain a smaller volume of transit through the Ukrainian gas transportation system.
The head of the Third Sector center, Andrey Zolotarev, said this on Ukrlife.tv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I think that Berlin no longer plays the role it did at the start of the Normandy format. It is clear that Paris and Berlin are openly burdened by these sanctions issues. Look how it turned out with Nord Stream 2 - for Europeans, prices have always been higher than values. And if the German economic and political elite made such a decision, then Germany should become the gas energy hub of Europe.
Already 2 years ago it was clear that Nord Stream 2 would be completed, and Biden did not sacrifice relations with Germany for the sake of Nord Stream 2. Trump was much more consistent in this regard, but he also systematically spoiled relations with Washington’s European allies. Therefore, as for Nord Stream 2, I think there can be no talk of any compensation.
This would be an absolutely fantastic option. But Merkel is quite capable of sweetening this bitter pill for us by maintaining some decent volume of gas transit, given that she communicates with Putin much more often than with our president,” concluded Andrei Zolotarev.
