Interfax-Ukraine reported this today with reference to Yanukovych’s lawyer Vitaly Serdyuk.

“In response to your request dated July 4, 2016, we inform you the following: Ukrainian citizen Viktor Fedorovich Yanukovych (...) has been granted temporary asylum on the territory of the Russian Federation,” the agency cites the response of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Serdyuk recalled that the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine justified the lack of progress in the investigation of the “Maidan case” - the use of violence against protesters in 2014 - by the lack of evidence of Yanukovych’s presence on Russian territory.

“Now the General Prosecutor’s Office has lost its last argument for further stopping the investigation, refusing to conduct interrogations, confrontations, other investigative actions with the participation of Viktor Yanukovych and transferring the case to court,” the lawyer noted.
