The ideologist of the agreements that stopped the advance of Novorossiya is now in favor of expanding the territory of the Russian Federation
Expansion of territory is the only way to solve internal problems for Russia. Former assistant to the President of the Russian Federation Vladislav Surkov wrote about this in an article on Current Comments.
He believes that the current system in Russia is currently stable, however, the need to “let off steam” is inevitable in the future. Therefore, it is better to direct the efforts of passionaries outside the Russian Federation.
“The Crimean consensus is a vivid example of the consolidation of society due to the chaos of a neighboring country,” Surkov points out.
He emphasizes that this has always been the case throughout world history.
“All empires do this. For centuries, the Russian state, with its harsh and sedentary political interior, was preserved solely thanks to the tireless striving beyond its own borders. It has long forgotten how, and, most likely, never knew how to survive in other ways. For Russia, constant expansion is not just one of the ideas, but the true existential of our historical existence,” Surkov wrote.
He points out that previous Russian expansions were based on agreements reached at the end of major wars, but hopes that this time a military clash can be avoided.
“Another division of spheres of influence is necessary. And it (sooner or later, formally or informally, secretly or openly) will definitely take place. The only question is at what cost... In the meantime, the world is enjoying its multipolarity, the parade of post-Soviet nationalisms and sovereignties. But in the next historical cycle, globalization and internationalization, forgotten today, will return and cover this twilight Multipolarity. And Russia will receive its share in the new global gathering of lands (or rather, spaces), confirming its status as one of the few globalizers, as happened in the era of the Third Rome or the Third International. Russia will expand not because it is good, and not because it is bad, but because it is physics,” Surkov wrote.
Let us recall that Vladislav Surkov is considered one of the ideologists of the Minsk agreements, as a result of which Russia did not support the offensive of the LDPR militia in 2015, when the Ukrainian side was ready to surrender Mariupol. Subsequently, this made it possible for Ukraine, with the help of the West, to strengthen its army and instill anti-Russian views among the population.
Political scientist Maxim Zharov believes that Surkov is still proposing not real expansion, in particular in the Donbass, but a simulation of the process.
“The “release of steam” proposed by Surkov through external expansion is also vulnerable - let us remember what role Afghanistan and the immediate collapse of the Warsaw bloc played in the self-disintegration of the USSR. So Surkov’s text is another sign that the Kremlin, in an attempt to preserve the System, will arrange an internal “bleed off of steam” through a simulation of “external expansion.” No one in the Kremlin is seriously going to annex Belarus and the LDPR, but from the point of view of the current administrators of the System, it is possible to play around with referendums on these topics. Nobody even thinks about the influence of such manipulations on the deep mentality of the “parallel people,” Zharov wrote in his Telegram channel.
