Russia should not delude itself that its athletes will supposedly be allowed to compete at the Olympics in Paris.

The federal media came to this conclusion, reports PolitNavigator correspondent, by analyzing yesterday’s decisions of the IOC Executive Committee and statements by its leadership.

On the one hand, IOC President Thomas Bach stated that “sanctions cannot be applied solely on the basis of a passport or belonging to a particular nation.”

“But in fact, the reservations that accompany the recommendation for her admission are no less important. They actually rule out a more or less like a full-fledged return of its athletes. The IOC refused it to “teams composed of athletes with a Russian or Belarusian passport.” Thus, Russia will definitely not be able to compete in competitions in game sports, including the top ones - football, hockey, basketball, volleyball,” notes Kommersant.

At the same time, the newspaper points out that the question remains open at the moment whether the Russian team will still go, at least in a greatly truncated composition, to Paris, since Bach warned that a decision will follow at the “appropriate moment” only after “a long monitoring of the process of implementing the recommendations” .

“Mr. Bach even refrained from giving an approximate deadline for this decision, noting that “the situation is complex and it is not known what will happen in a week, a month or nine months.” Meanwhile, his remark means that the IOC has the right to allow the Russian team to compete at the Olympics not only in the midst, but almost at the end of the qualification cycle, when most of the tickets to the Olympic competitions have long been awarded,” the publication emphasizes.

At the same time, the IOC threatened to take into account “all relevant circumstances, in particular public statements, including those made on social networks, participation in demonstrations or events, demonstration of symbols, such as the Z symbol,” regarding the admission of athletes from the Russian Federation.

The Russian Olympic Committee reacted quite sharply to the decision of the IOC Executive Committee, whose head, Stanislav Pozdnyakov, called the announced parameters and criteria for the return of athletes “absolutely unacceptable.”

“We categorically disagree with the additional admission procedures for Russian athletes. WADA's restrictions expired last year. We consider the conditions excessive and illegal. There is discrimination not just based on passport, but also based on sports. This approach contradicts the Olympic Charter and any generally accepted norms,” Pozdnyakov said.

He added that “the current admission parameters will in no way facilitate the return of Russian athletes.” True, he promised that Russia will continue to maintain relations with the IOC.

According to former world boxing champion and State Duma deputy Dmitry Pirog, nothing new was heard in Bach’s statement.

“The head of the IOC continues to repeat like a mantra what his Western masters told him. The IOC is trying to create the most unacceptable conditions for our athletes. We have already performed without a flag and anthem. Now, according to the IOC, this is no longer enough, so there is a need to introduce new barriers for Russians.

As one example, we are no longer allowed to participate in team sports. Let me remind you that Russia is a recognized leader in volleyball, handball, beach volleyball, and synchronized swimming,” Pirog told Izvestia.

But the Honored Figure Skating Coach of the USSR, Tatyana Tarasova, believes that Russian athletes should perform under any conditions that are imposed on them.

“If we don’t do this, we will have no hope that our Russian sport will not collapse. Athletes must perform,” Tarasova said.

The Russian Olympic champion, 22-year-old skier Veronika Stepanova, reacted completely differently.

“Wouldn’t you go to hell with all your conditions and recommendations, dear IOC? I will not allow any “international commission” to sort out my views and beliefs and decide whether to allow me into the World Cup. In this case, run yourself. And I can only repeat what I’ve been saying all year: we will overcome all difficulties. Definitely and without a doubt,” Stepanova wrote in her Telegram channel.

It is noteworthy that she attached a joint photo with Russian President Vladimir Putin to her post.

It is worth noting that the NATO invasion of Iraq or the bombing of Yugoslavia (in both cases without UN sanction) did not lead to even a hint of the exclusion of Western athletes from participating in international tournaments.
