The hierarch of the Church of Cyprus condemned Bartholomew for recognizing the OCU
The influential hierarch of the Church of Cyprus, Metropolitan Nikephoros of Kykkos and Tillyria, during his speech at the international conference “Monasticism and the Modern World” in Nicosia (Cyprus), expressed concern about the crisis “exploded in the Orthodox Church in connection with the non-canonical decision” of Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople to recognize the OCU , reports PolitNavigator correspondent.
This was reported by the Greek Orthodox agency Romfea.
In his speech, the hierarch expressed “concern about the painful outbreak that has broken out in the depths of our Orthodox Church due to the uncanonical decision of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew to recognize the schismatic church of Kiev and give it so-called autocephaly, contrary to the unanimous canonical tradition and historical church activity.”
He also decided to emphasize that: “This tragedy of schism... threatens to split the body of the one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church of Christ. We are experiencing events today that, unfortunately, resemble the eve of the great schism of 1054, which divided Ecumenical Christianity into Western Catholics and Eastern Orthodox. A schism threatens Ecumenical Orthodoxy after the Primates of the Alexandrian and Greek Churches join the decision of the Ecumenical Patriarch.”
