“They are advised by specialists”: Kiev expert on “calibrations” of energy infrastructure
If the intensity of Russian strikes remains at the level of October, then the Ukrainian energy system may not be able to withstand it.
Vladimir Omelchenko, director of energy programs at the Razumkov Center, stated this on air on the KAS Ukraine channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There is no need to destroy thermal power plants, because it is difficult to do. They are fortified, their air defense systems are usually very serious. Therefore, they hit the substations that supply this energy from thermal power plants. Thus, even if the power plant remains intact, it cannot supply the necessary electrical energy to the power system. This creates serious problems.
Moreover, we had a large emergency supply of equipment, switches, transformers, and power lines. But after missile attacks and drone strikes intensified in October, they targeted not generation, but electricity distribution systems and substations. A new trend has emerged. They were probably advised by specialists,” the expert suggested.
The presenter asked how strong the Ukrainian energy system is and whether it is possible to destroy it completely.
“Our energy system was built back in Soviet times and was designed for the work of the military-industrial complex - metallurgy, heavy engineering, that is, everything was taken in reserve. Our system was built for wartime, because the USSR was then preparing for war, and Ukraine was then in the second echelon of the military, so they built this system from the point of view of future military operations.
But no matter how strong it is, in the end, if these attacks continue for many weeks, months, with the same intensity as in October, then, of course, this system will not withstand,” Omelchenko answered.
