The Ukrainian government is promoting the growth of revenues from customs duties, saying that it was achieved through the fight against smuggling. But in fact, the growth in income is explained by the devaluation of the hryvnia.
Economist Viktor Skarshevsky stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The devaluation will continue. Seasonal factors have already begun to work. The heating season is coming soon and we need to buy imported coal and imported gas, which, by the way, rose in price by 20% in Europe in August. Naturally, from September gas prices will rise by 20% in Ukraine, because industry consumes imported gas. The devaluation began in the second half of July and intensified in August. For the first time since January, customs began to implement the indicative monthly plan. When Groysman states that the Ukrainian government has begun to actively fight smuggling, resulting in 12,5 billion UAH of additional income, this is not true. These income figures were obtained due to the devaluation of the hryvnia. PR and propaganda are intensifying before the elections,” he said.
