Trump's impeachment has entered an open phase
Members of the US House of Representatives on Thursday approved a resolution according to which the investigation into the possibility of impeachment of US President Donald Trump moves to the public stage, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
232 congressmen voted for approval of the resolution, 196 people voted against it.
“The resolution has passed,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.
All but two members of the Democratic Party voted for the resolution. All Republicans present at the vote voted against the resolution.
The resolution establishes procedures for open hearings before the Intelligence Committee and the release of testimony. It also allows Republicans to request testimony and documents, but Democrats still have the ability to block requests.
The resolution also states that the relevant committees involved in the Trump impeachment investigation will “continue investigations already in progress into whether there is sufficient evidence for the House of Representatives to exercise its constitutional power to impeach President Donald Trump.”
Let us recall that in the fall of 2019, a political scandal broke out in the United States around a conversation between Trump and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. The reason was media publications citing an informant that Trump allegedly put pressure on Zelensky to launch an investigation into one of the main US presidential candidates from the Democratic Party, Joe Biden, and his son Hunter.
After this, Democrats in the House of Representatives initiated impeachment proceedings against Trump on September 24.
