Import substitution turned out to be a trump card for Russia during a pandemic
Protective measures against anti-Russian sanctions actually contributed to the fact that Russia was ready for restrictions related to the pandemic.
Evgenia Serova, director of agricultural policy at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, stated this at a press conference in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“By the time the pandemic broke out, Russia was quite independent of the world food market, which turned out to be good, because we did not react very painfully to all the breaks in food chains that occurred all over the world. Plus, we are not very dependent on migrant labor in agriculture, although this exists, but this disruption in the movement of flows also did not happen, and this protected us.
Secondly, people stayed within the country, did not go abroad, they consumed food here, and I think that everyone associated with this sector registered some increase in food demand,” Serova said.
In turn, Andrei Danilenko, founder and president of the Agro-Food Fund “SVOYE”, noted that it was import substitution that had a positive impact on the prices of food products.
“I am ready to confirm expertly that if this domestic production did not exist now, if these volumes did not exist, then due to the situation, including the pandemic, prices for food products would be significantly higher if they were imported,” – said Danilenko.
