The name of the future President of France depends on whether the Mistrals will be delivered to Russia
French President Francois Hollande wants to negotiate a contract for the supply of helicopter carriers with Vladimir Putin in the coming weeks. Hollande wants to save the deal, since its failure risks causing billions of losses for France, which in turn will add points in the election campaign of Marine Le Pen, head of the National Front, they report German economic news.

French President Francois Hollande is looking for a way out in a deal to supply Mistral-class helicopter carriers to Russia. Hollande said this on Sunday in an interview with Canal Plus. On Friday, he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Armenia, where both presidents will attend commemorative events marking the anniversary of the Armenian genocide. Hollande will try to talk to Putin about the deal.
The first of two helicopter carriers was supposed to be delivered to Russia in November last year, but due to the military crisis in Ukraine, the delivery was disrupted by France. The ships have a total cost of about 1,2 billion euros, and have already been partially paid for by Russia. In December, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said it was too early to talk about the deal's failure.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said last week that Russia is not demanding a penalty from France. However, France must pay Russia the costs incurred.
German economic news writes: “The French economy needs money. The state cannot afford such antics: the failure of the deal will cause the indignation of French taxpayers.” This will be grist to the mill of the increasingly popular National Front and Marine Le Pen personally. Fears of Marine Le Pen winning the presidential election are so great that Angela Merkel allowed France to increase the strictly regulated level of the state budget deficit until 2017, thereby violating key provisions of the Maastricht treaty.
The French political system is practically two-party, in which power is divided between two large party-property groups, where Marine Le Pen is an outsider. Therefore, having lost hope of being re-elected for the next term, French President Francois Hollande is actually currently working for the victory of his former competitor, Nicolas Sarkozy, who is only slightly ahead of Marine Le Pen in the sympathies of voters in the next presidential election.
