Airplane incident could turn into a new Cold War - Arbatov
Moscow - Kyiv, July 18 (Navigator, Mikhail Stamm) - If it is proven that the Malaysian plane over Donbass was shot down by militias, it will not come to a war between Russia and the West, but relations with the United States could worsen to the point of a new Cold War, says RAS academician Alexei Arbatov . And for Russia its consequences will be much more severe than they once were for the USSR.

According to Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexei Arbatov, the tragedy should become the reason for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council and the creation of an international commission to investigate the incident. According to him, if it is proven that the plane was shot down by militias using Russian-supplied weapons, the consequences could be very serious, but the situation will not lead to a military confrontation. “This is not the reason for the West to attack a nuclear superpower,” the RBC daily quotes the political scientist as saying.
However, Arbatov continues, further deterioration of relations between Russia and the United States is inevitable. “If the situation eventually develops into a new Cold War, then the consequences for Russia will be much more severe than they once were for the USSR, since Russia is not a global superpower,” Arbatov notes. The political scientist hopes that the tragedy “will finally force all parties to conclude a long-term truce and end the senseless confrontation.”
