Ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to the country next week, the Indian government said it would not be party to any sanctions against Russia.
The Russian President will visit India on December 10-11. He will arrive at the 15th annual Russian-Indian summit, during which he will hold bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Ajay Bisaria, Secretary of the Eurasia Division of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, described the India-Russia relationship at the moment as a “special and privileged strategic partnership.”
He said the two countries "share similar views on important global issues, including the threat of terrorism, particularly in Russia and its neighborhood, and the need to defuse the chilly tensions that are increasingly evident in global relations."
“India has clearly stated that he cannot be a party to any economic sanctions against Russia,” Xinhua quoted the foreign ministry secretary as saying.
India and Russia are set to outline and discuss a “shared vision for their relationship over the next 10 years”, intending to provide a roadmap for taking the partnership to a whole new level with a strong emphasis on redefining the economic partnership.
