“India is preparing to assert its leadership role. However, at the same time, Delhi does not at all consider Russia’s war against Ukraine as a system-forming factor in global politics,” writes Korsunsky in the Kiev online publication “Zerkalo Nedeli.”

In addition, he explained why India is in no hurry to join the anti-Russian front.

“According to many Indian experts who are listened to, the West may be right in its assessment of the war in Ukraine, but this position is hypocritical, since the West itself is guilty of starting many conflicts in Asia - from Vietnam to Iraq. Therefore, India is not interested in isolating Russia - Delhi wants to have a dialogue with everyone in order to strive for universal peace and harmony.

According to him, Delhi is trying and striving to speak on behalf of the “global South.”

“And the message is this: developing countries need access to technology and capital, they need stable supplies of food and medicine, and efforts to prevent global climate change. Wars destroy their hopes and therefore they must be stopped as soon as possible and at any cost. Sanctions lead to higher prices and supply difficulties. For the countries of the “South,” Russia’s blocking of grain supplies from Ukraine is difficult.

For them, the result itself is important - the lack of grain, and this is the position that India intends to voice at the GXNUMX summit in September,” the diplomat notes.

At the same time, he noted that when India is criticized for its ties with Russia, “it says: doesn’t the West deal with dictatorial regimes when it needs it.”

The author recalls the words of former Indian leader Jawaharlal Nehru, who stated that they are not pro-Russian and not pro-American, pro-Indian.

“Therefore, India is simultaneously a member of BRICS, SCO and QUAD, therefore India most actively cooperates on issues of security and technology development with the United States (the world's largest buyer of Indian goods and services), but refuses the role of a “balancing mechanism” in the confrontation between Washington and Beijing. Delhi cooperates with Taiwan, but refrains from any steps that could provoke a conflict in the Taiwan Strait,” Korsunsky points out.

To summarize, he admits:

“It is important to understand that India does in many ways accurately reflect the position of states that do not want to choose sides in the US-China + Russia confrontation.”
