Sometimes they come back: a NATO officer who disappeared 35 years ago was found in the USA
In the US state of California, law enforcement officers detained former US Air Force officer William Howard Hughes Jr., who disappeared in 1983 in the city of Albuquerque, at that time he was 33 years old, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by the Associated Press with reference to the US Air Force Office of Special Investigations.
Hughes Jr. was arrested following an investigation into fraud using a false identity.
The agency says that 35 years ago, an Air Force officer had access to classified information. He was involved in the creation and analysis of NATO tracking systems during the Cold War. However, there is no indication that Hughes had ties to the Soviet Union or that he leaked classified information.
After his arrest, the officer admitted that he became disillusioned with the US Air Force and became depressed, after which he created a fake identity, withdrew $28 from his account and has since lived under an assumed name in California. Hughes Jr. is currently charged with desertion.
