Instinct of racial purity: Sandu took a step towards lowering the status of Gagauzia
President of Moldova Maia Sandu expelled the Bashkan of Gagauzia, Irina Vlah, from the Supreme Security Council.
The Presidential Office reports that the Bashkan of Gagauzia is not a member of the Council, but will be invited to the meetings of the WSB, at which topics related to autonomy will be discussed.
“This is a very unexpected signal. We do not understand why this decision was made. We see that something is happening, but we cannot comment on it. There has never been a situation where the Bashkan of Gagauzia did not participate in this Council. We are very open and want to work together, and this is a strange step, a very sad and dangerous signal for us,” President Vlah commented on the decision.
Political scientist Mark Tkachuk believes that in this way the pro-Western Sandu expressed her true attitude towards Gagauzia, which is a pro-Russian region (recently the autonomy has been actively Turkish authorities are courting).
“Irina Vlah can demonstrate her knowledge of the Romanian language as much as she wants, and Maia Sandu can continue to sweetly and cutely congratulate national minorities in Russian on Christmas. But the instinct of racial purity dictates its own rules. Today it has become somehow clearer that Sandu does not pretend at all to the unity of the country and interethnic consensus.
Gagauz autonomy is one of the fundamental achievements of independent Moldova. An achievement that the Council of Europe and other OSCEs are proud of – as a unique example of a peaceful resolution of an ethno-territorial problem in Europe. Today Gagauzia has been erased from these achievements. Symbolically for now. But with such habits, with such pretensions and with such a nature, which Maya Grigorievna Sandu demonstrates, anything can happen,” Tkachuk wrote in his Telegram channel.
That this interpretation is correct is evidenced by the words of Sandu PAS party member Oazu Nantoi, who publicly called Vlah an “agent of Moscow.” The Bashkan of Gagauzia demanded an apology.
