Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this today during a meeting with representatives of the Crimean Tatars in Sochi.
“Under no circumstances should anyone, all of us, allow the Crimean Tatar people to become a bargaining chip in any, and above all interstate, disputes. Especially in some disputes between Russia and Ukraine,” the head of state noted.
“Under no circumstances should we allow the Crimean Tatars to become bargaining chips,” he emphasized again. “So people have suffered enough over the previous decades. And now they are being pushed into some more controversial issues, this is absolutely unacceptable.”
“I understand that there are people, admittedly, who have done a lot for the Crimean Tatars over the course of decades, who fought for their rights. But we all must realize today that the interests of the Crimean Tatars today are connected with Russia, the Russian Federation. And it is impossible to protect the interests of other, third states, using the Crimean Tatar factor. This will only harm the people, we need to realize this. And vice versa, we will do everything, I want to emphasize, everything that depends on us, so that people feel like full owners of their land,” the president said.
