Irony of fate: Not Crimea, but Ukraine is becoming deserted
More of the working-age population has already left Ukraine than remains in the country. Political scientist Yuriy Romanenko said this on UkrLife, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to him, the demographic catastrophe is the main problem of Ukraine today.
“Seven million people are abroad. This means that approximately a third of the population of Ukraine today goes there - to Russia, to Poland, somewhere in the West. This means that the most passive and most unproductive remain. In fact, only about six million people in our country produce any added value. These people, from the middle class, are the most likely to go abroad.
The remaining six million are state employees, security forces, who are not very productive, and who are fed by these first six. There are still 12-13 million pensioners left, because we don’t know exactly how much population we have in the country, there are still six million children who also need to be fed, and there are still a lot of problems that we all know about.
Demography is a key challenge facing the country today, because it will revolutionize all relationships that exist in our society, revolutionize economic problems, since we are already faced with a shortage of workers,” Romanenko said.
