“The plans of the terrorist group members detained in the Almaty region included hijacking planes and committing a high-profile terrorist act similar to the attacks of September 11, 2001 in the United States. To achieve greater resonance, they considered options for carrying out terrorist attacks in crowded places,” Saken Mynbaev, a member of the Anti-Terrorism Center of Kazakhstan, told reporters.
According to him, members of this group also planned attacks on military units of the Border Service and the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan, high-ranking law enforcement officials and representatives of the SAMK. One of the terrorist groups liquidated in Kazakhstan planned to carry out large-scale terrorist attacks not only in the Republic of Kazakhstan, but also in Moscow according to example of the terrorist attacks in Paris in November 2015.
In total, according to Mynbaev, eight radical groups have been neutralized in Kazakhstan since the beginning of this year.
“Some of the neutralized groups acted under the direct leadership and instructions of militants of international terrorist organizations,” said Zhanat Saypoldaev, chief of staff of the Anti-Terrorism Center of the National Security Committee.
