Spain has denied that it has banned Russian warships from entering its ports.
The practice of Russian Navy ships calling at Spanish ports goes back decades.
The new Ambassador of Spain to the Russian Federation, Fernando Valderrama, spoke about this in an interview with Kommersant.
The publication asked a question about Russian warships, which two weeks ago entered the Spanish port of Ceuta for the first time since 2016, which outraged Spain’s NATO allies.
“This practice is decades old. It has been alive under different governments and has never ceased. Some media outlets have now reported that Spain has lifted the ban, but there was no ban. The last request from the Russian side for a visit was two years ago, and its consideration was terminated at its own request. There was no refusal from Spain,” the ambassador clarified. “Two years later, a new application came and was approved. I have great respect for what the Spanish media publishes, but in this case I can say that the situation was exactly as I said.”
Let us recall that the missile cruiser Marshal Ustinov, the tanker Dubna and the tugboat SB-406 entered the port of the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on the African coast.
