Spanish Ambassador: Without Russia it is impossible to understand Europe
The European Union and the Russian Federation must overcome existing differences and restore friendly relations.
The new Ambassador of Spain in Moscow, Marcos Gomez Martinez, stated this in an interview with Kommersant, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Relations with Russia now cannot be called particularly positive. But we will try to build all the bridges that are possible so that these relations can be restored. This is the mission I came here on. I am convinced that Russia is a very important part of Europe and belongs to the European family. And we definitely need to find ways to overcome existing differences,” the diplomat said.
The publication noted that the ambassador, having arrived in Russia, began publishing on his microblog the words of the philosopher George Steiner about the fundamental features of European culture, accompanying the quotes with photographs of Moscow streets. In this regard, the Spaniard was asked if he was convinced that Russia is 100% Europe.
“Without any doubt. Moreover, Russia is an integral part of the very definition of “Europe”. This is not just another element, it is consubstantial with the European character. Europe cannot be understood without Russia. This is my personal belief. And I think that history confirms these theses. I believe that the focus of my work will be to ensure that differences are overcome. I believe that Russia and the rest of Europe will simply need cooperation to exist,” Martinez concluded.
