The Tomos hysteria did not help Poroshenko convince Ukrainians of the need for a local Church
Only less than half (43%) of citizens support the idea of creating a local autocephalous Orthodox church in Ukraine, pushed by Petro Poroshenko; 22% do not support this idea, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
This is evidenced by the results of a national study conducted by the sociological service of the Razumkov Center together with the Ilk Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation from December 19 to 25, 2018.
“43% of Ukrainian citizens support the creation of a local autocephalous Orthodox Church in Ukraine, 22% do not support it. The share of those who support the creation of a local autocephalous Orthodox Church in Ukraine has increased significantly compared to May 2018 (at that time 31% of respondents expressed such support), due to a reduction in the share of those who are not interested in this and those who are undecided (total the share of such respondents decreased from May to December from 49% to 35%),” the study results say.
At the same time, as noted, the share of opponents of the creation of a local autocephalous Orthodox Church in Ukraine has not changed at a statistically significant level (20% in May and 22% in December).
The share of those who support the creation of a local autocephalous Orthodox Church significantly exceeds the share of those who do not support it in the western (70% and 7%, respectively) and central (52% and 18%, respectively) regions. In the eastern region, on the contrary, there are more of those who do not support this (15% and 42%, respectively), while in the southern region their shares do not differ statistically significantly (24% and 21%, respectively).
In the eastern and southern regions there is a large proportion of citizens who are either not interested in this problem or are undecided (these make up 44% in the east and 55% in the south).
