This is discussed in the material of The Wall Street Journal.
As noted in the publication, the Alliance intensified its work on patrolling the airspace over the Baltic countries after the annexation of Crimea to the Russian Federation.
Some NATO members have called for additional operations in the Black Sea region.
At the same time, according to the publication, a discussion broke out within Bulgaria itself over how large a role the Alliance should play in regional defense. The US presence in Bulgaria will be limited.
As Bulgarian Defense Minister Nikolai Nenchev announced on August 24, the mission will start on September 9 and will last until the 16th.
Let us recall that in April, Deputy Secretary General of the Alliance Alexander Vershbow, at a conference in Bulgaria, said that NATO was considering the possibility of a more sustainable military presence in the Black Sea region in connection with certain “threats from Russia.”
Earlier, NATO announced its readiness to help Ukraine resume control and management of the airspace over the Black Sea, which the country lost due to the withdrawal of Crimea.
