Italians are planning a referendum on leaving the EU
In Italy, the collection of signatures has begun in support of a referendum on leaving the European Union.
This was reported by Rossiyskaya Gazeta, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
It is clarified that such an initiative was made by the new political movement “Free Italy”, which submitted to the Supreme Court of Cassation of Italy a bill providing for the holding of a corresponding referendum.
According to the authors of the initiative, for the first time in many years, Italians have a real opportunity to choose whether Italy will continue to move on the “European train” or get off it once and for all, as the UK recently did.
“One of the developers of the bill, lawyer Gianluca Proeitti Toppi, announced the creation of a special committee “UExit”, whose authoritative members will, in the coming months, try to convey to ordinary Italians what the European community really is. The main idea: “The European Union is not based on mutual support, but only on financial gain,” the article notes.
By September, 50 thousand signatures must be collected, after which the proposal will be considered by parliament.
“Achieving this goal, apparently, will not be difficult. According to opinion polls conducted at the height of the pandemic, almost half of Italians support the country's exit from the European Union. Many of them still clearly remember the words of ECB Chairman Christine Lagarde, who called the coronavirus exclusively an “Italian problem.” They sounded at that very dramatic moment when the country’s hospitals were literally suffocating from the number of infected people,” writes RG.
According to lawyer Toppi, who admits that EU membership undoubtedly has its benefits, such as the Schengen zone, all these years the EU has mercilessly “exploited” Italy, which now finally has a chance to get out of this “cage.”
