Election results: Pro-Western forces retained power in Moldova
Pro-Western forces have every chance of retaining power in Moldova, and President Igor Dodon, who has demonstrated his readiness to cooperate with Moscow, will remain head of state without real powers.
This is evidenced by the preliminary results of the elections, which took place on February 24, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The official website of the CEC gives Dodon's Socialist Party only 31% of the votes.
But two pro-Western forces (albeit competing with each other) - “Acum” (the pro-Western opposition of Maia Sandu) and the Democratic Party of Moldova (oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc) gain 26% and 24%, respectively.
The Central Election Commission gives another 8,5% to the Shor party, which was initially seen as a spoiler for the socialists to dilute their votes.
Thus, the maximum task of the socialists to form a majority on which Dodon could rely still looks vague.
There remains the possibility of creating a coalition with the pro-Western opposition. By the way, Dodon stated that his point of view on forcing Transnistria to return to the control of Chisinau coincides completely with the “pro-European” forces.
If it is not possible to create a coalition in the new parliament, Moldova will face another election.
Thank you!
