The majority in the Rada puts Zelensky before a difficult choice
The absolute majority received by the Servant of the People party in the new Verkhovna Rada gives President Vladimir Zelensky and his team freedom of maneuver in Donbass.
This was stated to Izvestia by the head of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, Konstantin Kosachev, who noted that under Poroshenko it was often said that it was impossible to pass laws provided for in the Minsk agreements through the fragmented parliament.
“Now the situation is changing fundamentally. It is not that parliament is now subordinate to the president, but is under his control. This means that either Kyiv begins to fulfill its obligations under the Minsk agreements, or it does not. Both will comprehensively demonstrate the position of the new leadership of Ukraine. One branch of power will no longer be able to hide behind another,” Kosachev believes.
According to him, even before the elections, there was “certain development” in the peaceful settlement, but this is not enough, and now the current Ukrainian government must do what the previous one shied away from for several years.
“Then everything will become clear to Ukrainian patrons in the West, who tried by all means to conceal Kiev’s failure to comply with the Minsk agreements. Either of the two scenarios will at least restore order - with a plus or minus sign. One way or another, the period of hypocrisy and deceit, or, to call a spade a spade, lies, will end, as we saw during the Poroshenko period,” the senator concluded.
