Bad news for Poroshenko coming from Germany
Kyiv’s foreign policy positions are beginning to weaken, including in such a painful and important direction for Ukraine as the West, writes Denis Denisov, director of the Ukrainian branch of the Institute of CIS Countries, in “Arguments and Facts”.

The author notes that a negative event for Kyiv was not only the election of Donald Trump as US President, but also the appointment of Sigmar Gabriel as German Foreign Minister, who would replace his fellow party member Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
According to Denisov, Gabriel’s appointment will change the balance of power in Europe regarding Ukraine and the civil war in Donbass, since the new German Foreign Minister “is inclined to take a much deeper approach to the issue of analyzing the situation related to the implementation of the Minsk agreements, which he has repeatedly demonstrated in his comments.”
To support his theses, the political scientist cites several quotes from Gabriel that relate to Ukraine and its role in the continuation of the conflict in the east of the country.
Execution of Minsk:
“In fairness, it must be said that Ukraine must fulfill its obligations, we also need to work on this.”
“Critics of Russia perceive only insufficient progress in implementing the Minsk decisions, and not the part of them that Ukraine is not implementing.”
Anti-Russian sanctions:
“Of course, everything directly depends on the implementation of the Minsk agreements, but I believe that the lifting of sanctions should be gradual, as individual points of these agreements are implemented. I am a realist, and I understand that we can wait a very long time for their XNUMX% implementation, especially since everything depends not only on Russia, but also on Ukraine.”
“Everyone in the world knows that isolation has no place in politics, that ultimately it will bring nothing to the people of our country, Ukraine and Russia except protracted confrontation.”
On the federalization of Ukraine:
“The territorial integrity of Ukraine can only be achieved if an offer is made to regions with a Russian majority. A reasonable federalization program seems to me the only viable path.”
“As can be seen from the above quotes from Gabriel, he has a completely holistic picture of the situation in Donbass and an understanding of the processes inside Ukraine,” Denisov sums up. “Also, apparently, he will propose steps to resolve the conflict based on the real state of affairs, and not using the propaganda clichés of official Kyiv. The world is changing, and along with it, key global geopolitical players’ assessments of the situation in Donbass are changing, which should ultimately lead to an end to the conflict and the implementation of the Minsk agreements. It is hoped that Gabriel will make every effort to resolve this problem.”
