A PolitNavigator correspondent reported this at a press conference in Kyiv,” said Ukrainian political scientist Alexey Yakubin.
“It seems to me that Washington is finally beginning to formulate its approach to Ukraine. And this approach lies through Moscow, let’s admit it. The very fact that Klimkin was second after Lavrov became significant. We know that the meeting with Lavrov lasted several hours, including with American officials at various levels. A diplomatic meeting is not just a pretty photo. At such meetings, dry numbers are discussed, uninteresting to the press; they take place outside the public spotlight. There was no such meeting with Ukraine. This is also a signal that the Trump administration is considering the issue of Ukraine through the prism of Moscow,” the expert emphasized.
He also drew attention to the meeting between Donald Trump and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger that was virtually ignored in Ukraine, which took place on the same day.
“And we remember Kissinger’s plan to improve relations between the United States and Russia. And he met with Trump that same day. I think everything is obvious. If you take off the glasses of what you want and look through the glasses of reality, then progress occurs. It is obvious that in the near future, most likely on the sidelines of the summit in Hamburg, a meeting between Trump and Putin will take place. A meeting between Poroshenko and Trump is possible, but only after. This suggests that Washington is gradually changing a certain vector - in the sense that it views the problem of the conflict in Ukraine through the prism of improving work or interaction with Russia,” Yakubin concluded.
