Ukraine has launched a procedure to ban a TV channel because of the Russian language
The National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting has launched a procedure for revoking the license of the NewsOne TV channel.
The corresponding decision was unanimously adopted at today’s meeting of the National Council.
According to First Deputy Regulatory Authority Olga Gerasimyuk, the TV channel “is recognized as inciting national, racial, religious enmity and hatred.”
The decision of the National Council also refers to filing a lawsuit to revoke the license. In addition, Gerasimyuk clarified that the TV channel will continue to operate until the court’s decision.
As Ukrainian media indicate, the National Council saw “incitement of interethnic hatred and enmity” in a speech on the TV channel by the former head of the information department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, MP from the OPZZh Oleg Voloshin, who said that in the country it is necessary to consolidate the right of people to their native language, about the need to comply with Minsk agreements that spell out the special status of Donbass, according to which laws on decommunization and Ukrainization will not apply in this territory.
