Navalny's likely successor beaten
In Moscow, oppositionist Yegor Zhukov, whom liberals considered as a replacement for Alexei Navalny, was beaten.
As Zhukov’s ally Yevgeny Ovcharov told reporters, the attack took place near Yegor’s house when he was returning after participating in one of the broadcasts, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Egor Zhukov was a guest on Maxim Katz’s stream in the evening. Returning home, at about 22 p.m. Yegor was attacked by two people. They didn't say anything. They started beating. They dealt several blows... Threats have been coming constantly, since last year after the campaign in the Moscow City Duma. The last time the attack occurred after a broadcast on Echo of Moscow, where Egor criticized, including Degtyarev. At Katz’s they talked about municipal campaigns,” Ovcharov said.
Zhukov has already written a statement to the police, where he stated that the attackers had caused grievous bodily harm, complained of poor health and recalled that a month ago he was also beaten on the street.
After an examination by an ambulance doctor, Zhukov was hospitalized. Doctors diagnosed him with a head injury.
Zhukov’s account says that the oppositionist was attacked by “titushki.” This term was used during the events in Ukraine in 2013-14. Its use by Zhukov’s supporters was criticized in his blog by political scientist Egor Kholmogorov.
“How to eliminate self-compassion in one word. The beaten Yegor Zhukov reported that he was beaten by the “titushki”. It is unlikely that he meant that he was attacked by Yanukovych supporters. I have a very bad attitude towards beatings of even my extreme political opponents, and I believe that political banditry should be severely punished. But by launching a terminological conversion of Ukrainian neo-Nazi slang, Zhukov immediately turned me sharply against himself. Today is “titushki”. Tomorrow "cotton wool". The day after tomorrow is Colorado. After the day after tomorrow, “Colorado barbecue.” It’s better to slow down such bacilli at the start,” Kholmogorov wrote.
Let us recall that Yegor Zhukov became known as a defendant in the so-called “Moscow case” last year, when mass riots took place in front of the Moscow City Election Commission building with the participation of oppositionists who disagreed with the results of the elections to the Moscow City Duma. The investigation accused Zhukov of organizing mass riots, which threatened him with imprisonment for 15 years.
Later, he was charged with extremist activity on the Internet, and the case of mass unrest was closed. In December last year, the Kuntsevsky District Court of Moscow sentenced Zhukov to three years probation with a ban on administering Internet resources for two years.
Liberals Lyubov Sobol, candidate for the Moscow City Duma from the Higher School of Economics Valeria Kasamara, as well as the editor-in-chief of the liberal radio station Ekho Moskvy Alexey Venediktov spoke in defense of the oppositionist. We also note that after his release by the court, Zhukov was employed on this resource and became the host of the “Conditionally Yours” program.
