A well-known liberal declared reunification with Crimea a “monstrous mistake”
The former mayor of one of the largest Russian cities, Ekaterinburg, Evgeniy Roizman, considers the annexation of Crimea to Russia illegal.
He stated this in an interview with the famous Ukrainian propagandist Dmitry Gordon, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The politician called the reunion that took place in 2014 a “monstrous mistake.”
“Here is the annexation of Crimea. It was also unexpected for us. And I understand, as a historian, what a monstrous mistake this was, that this could not have been done, that this was a blow to the country. I just understand these things as a historian. And I understand how long it takes to plan ahead.
Firstly, for me the situation itself is ugly. Well, the neighbors started a quarrel, they are sorting it out among themselves, and at this time they come and steal something, because they are busy there. This was already ugly. But I still, first of all, think about my country, and therefore, as a citizen of Russia, as a person who loves his country, I understood what a monstrous mistake this was and I understood that this cannot be done, that this story will last for a long time, that they won’t swallow it,” Roizman said.
At the same time, he admitted that he could not say this publicly for fear of criminal prosecution and came up with his own scheme to avoid answering the question of whose Crimea is.
“It was a very difficult and difficult time for me. It is clear that I did not deviate a millimeter from my position, but I built up the rhetoric. Imagine, there is some kind of meeting going on, there are 300 people in the hall and they ask me a direct question. For me to answer this straightforward question honestly, well, they can initiate a criminal case against me. I understand this perfectly well, but I cannot and will not lie under any circumstances. I found a format where when there is a public lecture, they ask a question, I say: “You know what, let’s do this - the fire is burning and don’t force me to add kerosene to this fire,” Roizman said.
