Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced this today during the opening Moscow Conference on International Security, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“It should be noted that the deployment of a global missile defense system continues. After the US withdrawal from the ABM Treaty, it became obvious that the development of this type of weapon is aimed at undermining the deterrence potential of Russia and China. During numerous negotiations, our partners categorically denied this thesis, however, the US conceptual documents officially enshrine the anti-Russian orientation of work in the missile defense field. This once again confirmed the correctness of our assessments of this system.
Today, the United States is deploying missile defense facilities outside its territories, shifting to its allies part of the task of protecting the continental United States from ballistic missile attacks. In essence, their allies are becoming hostages to Washington's adventurous security decisions. A missile defense system will never be able to provide XNUMX% protection of objects. Means of overcoming missile defense can be developed and put into service in a short time. The Russian Federation has solved this problem,” Shoigu said.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov clarified that representatives of European countries that are members of NATO are present at the conference in Moscow today.
“It’s good that representatives of a number of European NATO countries are present in the hall today. We know that you are here, despite the pressure on your capitals from Washington to boycott our conference,” Lavrov said.
“By the way, in the same way, the United States prohibited its allies from taking part in the demonstration of the 9M729 missile organized by our Ministry of Defense in January of this year, so that it could be verified that its characteristics complied with the parameters of the INF Treaty. Probably, if someone avoids a substantive conversation, it means the position is weak, there are not enough arguments,” the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized.
