Due to the conflict in Donbass and the breakdown of relations with Russia, Ukrainians began to be treated worse in Syria. Ukrainian journalist Roman Bochkala, who recently visited Syria, stated this on Radio Vesti.

According to him, before the conflict in Donbass, Ukrainians and Russians were perceived as a single whole - friends of the Syrian people.

“We have always been perceived by Syria as a kind of satellite of Russia, and the Russian Federation is one of the main partners. Now we are perceived as a kind of pro-Western side, pro-American, and therefore the corresponding attitude towards journalists. If earlier, when you said in Syria: “I am from Ukraine,” then they still continued to call you “Rus.” For them there used to be “Rus” and “Ukrainian Rus”. And now no - there is a slight pause, and you feel that the attitude towards you is cooler. Now Ukrainians are Ukrainians, and Russians are Russians,” Bochkala said.
