Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky waited until the celebration of Independence Day to sign a law allowing for disconnection from public services during quarantine against the backdrop of festivities and good mood of people.

Kiev economist Maxim Goldarb stated this in his video blog, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

He noted that the law “On amendments to certain legislative acts of Ukraine regarding simplification of connection to electric networks” signed by the president came into force on August 26. The new law removes from the previously adopted “On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine Aimed at Preventing the Occurrence and Spread of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)” the clause that for the period of quarantine and within 30 days from the date of its cancellation, it is prohibited to stop or suspending the provision of services to consumers who do not pay for them.
“He waited until the Independence Day parade passed, when people were drunk with artificial happiness and did not pay attention to one thing. Yesterday he signed a law that now allows monopolies to cut off Ukrainians from heat, water, and electricity. During quarantine. He abolished everything that was prohibited. They can now turn off residential buildings and villages. This is his real face. This is who he works for when he talks about how he is against the oligarchs,” the expert said.

“A billion euros is just for road construction. How much money was wasted in the fight against Covid? How much is spent using tax instruments, cashing out, theft? Over the past year, damage from the activities of state-owned enterprises in Ukraine amounted to 52 or 54 billion hryvnia. It’s not just like that – if something has left somewhere, it means something has arrived somewhere,” the economist noted.

“And they really don’t want to be removed from power now. They really don't want to. Not to mention the fact that they committed a lot of obvious crimes. They will never earn that much. Do you remember how one “servant of the people” wrote in parliament a year ago about the money from the Ministry of Health, “the grandmothers here are such that there is enough for their grandchildren”? Then the journalists took a photo and showed it. And they are now trying to cling to power as much as possible,” Goldarb concluded.
