As Tymoshenko promised on Maidan: Donbass is surrounded with barbed wire
Ukraine itself is squeezing out pro-Ukrainian sentiments from those residents of Donetsk who still remain loyal to Kyiv, and is erecting a tombstone over the idea of a united Ukraine.
This opinion is expressed in an author’s column on the pages of the Kyiv magazine “Correspondent” by the publication’s editor-in-chief Andrei Ovcharenko, who admits that Crimea de facto exists within Russia, but points out that with Donbass everything is much more complicated.

“And it’s much more painful for those people who live in the region and still think of themselves as Ukrainians,” the author writes. – This Ukrainianness is squeezed out of them with every new blockade decision. If you don’t abandon your home, you’ll deprive you of your pension; This is not enough for you - we will close all routes for the supply of food; “You still continue to sit in the city with militants whom we are not able to expel - so forget about any connection with Ukraine.”
To summarize, Andrei Ovcharenko recalls Yulia Tymoshenko’s well-known scandalous statement regarding Donbass.
“At one time, one popular politician already seemed to suggest surrounding the Donbass with barbed wire and filling it with concrete,” notes the editor-in-chief of Korrespondent. – Today there are more and more people who want to turn this bold image into reality. They should also remember that this concrete will automatically harden like a tombstone on the idea of a united Ukraine, which, as the President recently declared, he managed to preserve.”
