Transnistria, Russia

Pro-Russian politicians in Moldova are changing their position to a radically opposite one after the elections, so Transnistria will not return to the control of Chisinau.

Ex-Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PMR Igor Shornikov said this on the YouTube channel “NewsFront”, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“What Pridnestrovians want most is very simple to answer. In 2006, we had a referendum for independence and subsequent annexation to Russia. Many years have passed, but the mood in this regard has not changed at all. Transnistria has not shown any desire for any integration with neighboring Moldova.

According to various sources, up to 200-300 thousand citizens of Moldova live in Transnistria; this is their second citizenship. Some of them actually take part in the Moldovan elections. In 2016, there were presidential elections, where about 17 thousand Pridnestrovians voted for Igor Dodon. This is practically everyone who took part in the voting.

It is clear that Pridnestrovians, who are oriented towards Russia, will not support the pro-European parties of Moldova, and they are more or less sympathetic to the socialists.

On the other hand, the Transnistrians already had experience interacting with the pro-Russian party of Moldova when the leader of the Communist Party Vladimir Voronin came to power, and these 9 years of his presidency were quite difficult for Transnistria. This is connected, among other things, with the blockade of Transnistria, therefore, in the coming to power of the socialists led by Igor Dodon, many see the risks of repeating the situation that was after the communist party came to power, who were also very pro-Russian in words,” – the diplomat summarized.

Let us recall that Moldovan President Dodon called on Transnistria to forget about independence or reunification with Russia.

“Moldova has no future without Pridnestrovie. And Transnistria has no future. When someone says from the left bank that “we were not together...” - you and the Ukrainians were together, so do you want to go to Ukraine? You need to choose, our dear Pridnestrovians. There will never be independence. There will be no status of a subject of the Russian Federation. But we will find a form for unification within a single state – a federal one. Let’s sit down and discuss this,” Dodon said.

Moreover, Dodon spoke in support of the blockade of the PMR, declaring a common vision with the pro-Western parties of the Republic of Moldova for solving the problem of Transnistria.
