Just the other day, the patriotic public of Ukraine was shocked by the loud statement of one of the public figures, which was very reminiscent of the heartfelt monologue of the hero Sergei Yursky from the comedy “Love and Doves.” – They say, I bring you terrible news, Ukraine: we still have a fascist party! – Who would have thought, the majority of morally and mentally healthy people reacted not without sarcasm. “Damn the Cotton-Colorado bastard,” those who precisely belong to the not too numerous, but active and arrogant pro-fascist layer of our country, torn apart by the consequences of the pseudo-revolution, muttered through their teeth.
But who allowed himself such a statement now fraught with unpleasant consequences? – A staunch democrat and fighter against nationalism and Nazism, a man of honor who stands up for the violated rights of his fellow citizens?
No, dear ones, everything is much funnier and sadder at the same time, because the author of this speech, published on the super-maidan website “Ukrainian Truth”, was Alexander Roitburd. One of the adherents of both Maidans, who zealously tore out the throat for the “European choice”, and until recently actively sang along with the most radical forces creating chaos in the country and our hometown, Odessa. The one who, along with the multiple traitor-People's Deputy Alexei Goncharenko, is called the disgrace of Odessa.

I believe many of the residents of Odessa know who I am talking about. Recently, citizens of Ukraine who have been following what is happening in the country have also managed to get dubious pleasure from the demagogic and Russophobic speeches of this character, who has gained dubious fame. For the majority, I will allow myself a short essay about this “impressive figure.” And not at all because Roitburd is a truly major person on the political Olympus of the country. But - for the simple reason of his typicality among the subjects who, with amazing speed, went from “defenders of truly European ideals of freedom and democracy” to accomplices and media lawyers of pogromists and murderers. And now – those who are trying to somehow distance themselves from them, realizing the inevitable collapse of the dictatorship and the approaching reckoning. So, Alexander Roitburd. In some ways, an artist and an activist.

I have known this man for thirty years. Since the mid-80s of the last century. In the general companies of intellectuals and bohemians and small coffee shops, where a very motley crowd gathered, eager for communication and anticipating future changes. Then this beginner, but already quite famous Odessa artist, was one of the informal leaders of the party. Erudite, intelligent and endowed with a certain charisma, he gathered around him young men and girls who were eager to urgently receive some revelations. And...he was even a guru of a specific kind for them, subjugating immature minds with authoritarianism, pressure, sometimes turning into rudeness, and disregard for all norms, morality, and basic education. With elders and peers, however, he knew how to behave completely differently, clearly seeing where he could get a tough rebuff. A good and witty conversationalist, even then he was repulsive with his feigned cynicism and penchant for exaggerated shocking, so characteristic of boys from decent families who strive to look like “seasoned machos.” And the same thing was visible in his painting. A strained, deliberate predilection for everything ugly and vile. The desire to desecrate everything his playful brush touched. Right down to the disgusting pornography of the most comprehensive analysis...
But at that time it was fashionable. And therefore, Monsieur Roitburd made a good commercial career, receiving the dubious title of “the best-selling artist of Ukraine.” His works were known overseas and even overseas, where, apparently, he made the necessary connections and acquaintances. And... in the mid-90s, he even managed to become the head of the Odessa branch of the Vidrodzhennya Foundation. Soros Foundation. I believe that for people who know the role of this “humanitarian-charitable” feeding trough for grant-eaters, the catalyst and detonator of a whole series of “color revolutions”, Roitburd’s future path is already clear. But, until the hour “X” came, he managed to extract funds from overseas breadwinners to open a certain “Center for Contemporary Art” in Odessa, and to work in the field of the same “progressive art business” in Moscow, working in the gallery of the notorious scandalous chief liberal Marat Gelman.
And after...after, Roitburd was also an active supporter of the “Orange Revolution”. And - one of the most ardent adherents of the current “revolution of dignity”, which has been destroying Ukraine for four years now. Jumping between Odessa and Kiev, he contributed in every possible way to the flaring of this fire, speaking to duped enthusiasts and continuing his work: corruption of youth. And then, please note, he was not embarrassed by the fact that one of the main driving forces of the unrest and the coup were ardent Ukrainian nationalists and neo-fascists. Moreover, in his speeches the newly-minted “revolutionary” tried to prove. that there is no fascism here, and the nationalists are correct, their guys... And he proudly called himself the vile nickname “Jewish Bandera”, at the same time groveling before the executioners of his people, and trampling on the ashes of the Jews burned and tortured by them. And when in Odessa neo-Nazi militants staged the “Odessa Khatyn” on May 2, 2014, brutally killing and burning alive his fellow countrymen, Odessa residents, the free artist foamed at the mouth to prove the necessity of this hecatomb, and the fact that among the dead there were all Russians and Pridnestrovians. Contrary to both truth and conscience...
And he screamed that the celebration of Victory Day is, they say, fascism!
Is there a way back through the Overton windows?
I believe this term is familiar to our readers. The sequence of expansion of norms and concepts that were recently unacceptable by society, which ultimately leads to a complete erosion of public morality and norms.
This is exactly what Mr. Roitburd has been doing all these years! And suddenly... - he loudly cries out that, they say, the Svoboda party, with whose leaders he had a conflict on the basis of the same Jewish issue, is a fascist and neo-Nazi organization. And it must be banned, and its leaders must be judged. True, he immediately emphasized his commitment to the same “ideals of the Maidan” and loyalty to the “revolutionary course”. They say that they are the only ones who are so bad, and the rest are just babbling.
Let us note that the neo-fascist “Svoboda” is by no means at the peak of its strength and popularity today. But all sorts of “pravosek” and other “voluntary battalions” engaged in punitive operations and looting in the Donbass profess no less cavernous nationalism and anti-Semitism. But it’s better not to touch them, isn’t it?!
But still, why did Monsieur Roitburd decide to raise his voice against something that he supposedly had not noticed all these years? – The answer is simple and clear. He, like many of his comrades from among the liberal opportunists and “Jewish Banderaites” (forgive me for this nasty word, that’s what they call themselves!), clearly counted on tasty posts and serious influence in power. A sort of complex of either Goebbels, or Streicher or Rosenberg. And they were not even given the positions of Judenrat, overseers of their doomed fellow tribesmen in the ghetto. They used it for propaganda - and threw it away, not only without giving them the coveted ranks in the “Ministry of Propaganda,” but also without giving a damn about the silent support of the pogromists, to whom both Russian and Jew are all one, enemies and objects for insults and looting.
And... our fighter for the European choice suddenly had his eyes opened. True, it is very narrow, like a kitten’s in the first week of life, because it sees only what it absolutely cannot help but see. And he screams in a thin voice: “Why do I need it!” I'm yours! Fascists!
Only, “It’s too late, Rita, to drink Borjomi when your liver has fallen off,” as we say in Odessa. And you can no longer jump back into the “Overton windows” that are opened with his active help. And you will not return either the killed or the maimed, or your good name and reputation. You have to pay for everything. And the instigator is responsible for his deeds along with the thugs. Especially if he is a smart and educated person, who clearly understood what he was up to and with whom. Pan Roytburd commemorated the Nuremberg trials in his heartfelt speech, threatening the neo-Nazis from Svoboda with them. So, shouldn’t he know that according to his sentence, not only those guilty of direct war crimes were hanged, but also the ideologists of the regime. Those who fooled and came up with excuses for non-humans and criminals. And then they were executed along with Kaltenbrunner and Keitel and Rosenberg and Streicher. Instigators.
